Premier change could lead to alterations in the EFL, admits football finance expert

STOKE City and their Championship rivals can expect the EFL to at least consider following the Premier League in getting rid of Profitability & Sustainability Rules, according to a football finance expert.
-
Dr Tom Bason, Assistant Professor (Research) at Coventry University, has told The Sentinel the league's concern over the state of clubs’ finances could see them consider following the Premier League by replacing PSR with Squad Cost Ratio rules.
As things stand Championship clubs are allowed to lose £39 million over a three-year period - with potential points deductions for a breach. The rules were mirrored in the top flight, albeit with a £105m limit.
The Premier League voted to change their rules last week, opting for Squad Cost Ratio regulations which limit clubs’ spending to 85 per cent of their football-related revenue.
With some Championship clubs spending more than they raise, Dr Bason expects the EFL will follow suit.
“I think the fact that you have at the moment such different regulations, you have the Salary Cost Management Protocol that's in League One and League Two,” he said.
