Customers saddened as two town banks shut in 12 days

A BLUE plaque on Leek's Halifax branch commemorates Sir Enoch Hill, who was born in the town and transformed the building society in the early 20th century.

But a century on, there is little else to indicate Leek ever had a Halifax.

The branch closed for the final time this month - one of nine in England and Wales to shut in the first week of June.

Now the signs have gone from the Derby Street building and the cash point is boarded up.

Last week. NatWest, housed in an attractive landmark building further along Derby Street, also shut for good. Signs informing customers sit below intricate wooden door carvings.

NatWest says banking 'has changed dramatically in recent years' adding: "Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously.
