PORT Vale are through to the second round of the League Cup after dispatching Blackpool 1-0 on the Fylde coast.

A debut goal from giant striker Mo Faal on 75 minutes and a brilliant display from Ben Heneghan saw Darren Moore's team to a first competitive victory of the new campaign following their defeat to Rotherham and draw with Cardiff City in League One.

As expected Moore ripped up the team from the one that played superbly against Cardiff City in League One the previous Thursday.

He made nine changes to the lineup with Jordan Gabriel making his debut for the club on the right of a midfield five, while there were first starts this season for Heneghan, Jack Shorrock, Rhys Walters and Rico Richards all made first starts of the season.

That meant only keeper Marko Marosi and Kyle John retained their places while the bench saw nine more names, including latest signings, goalkeeper Joe Gauci and loan striker Faal.

There was still no Ben Garrity, while Sam Hart wasn't involved, nor were Lorent Tolaj, Connor Hall and Funso Ojo.

In a sparsely populated stadium and in a quiet atmosphere on a humid night, Steve Bruce’s hosts attempted to play a passing game in crisp fashion as they pressed Vale back.

The hardworking John received an early booking for a foul on Tom Bloxham just before Heneghan smashed a crossfield pass out of play, much to Moore’s annoyance.
