'Loner' robber's life 'blighted by alcohol'

DRUNKEN Christopher O'Connell brandished a knife during a terrifying robbery at a shop.
The 47-year-old entered Longport News convenience store in Longport at 8am on April 11.
The owner was inside the shop and his wife was outside unloading items from the car when O’Connell, a regular customer, selected four cans of lager and a pie. He tried to open a shutter and get a pack of cigarettes but the shopkeeper challenged him.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard they both fell to the floor and O'Connell punched his victim to the neck four times. The victim’s wife entered, shouted for him to stop and tried to get between the men.
