Fans flock to see depiction of Motörhead star

- Sentinel Reporter

HUNDREDS of Motorhead fans descended on Burslem for the unveiling of a statue of rock legend Lemmy.

The 2.25m bronze sculpture of the late Motörhead frontman was unveiled in the Mother Town's Market Place yesterday, as part of a series of events celebrating the band's 50th anniversary.

Lemmy - real name Ian Fraser Kilmister - was born in Burslem in 1945 and later lived in Newcastle and Madeley.

In 1971 he joined Hawkwind as a bassist and vocalist, and formed Motörhead four years later.

The statue, which has been funded entirely through private donations, was created by local scupltor and lifelong Motörhead fan Andy Edwards, best known for his statue of the Beatles on Liverpool's waterfront.

It depicts Lemmy at the height of his fame in the 1980s, in an iconic pose with his bass guitar, singing up towards a microphone.
