Former mayor who 'bragged he could get away with anything' jailed for historic sex offences

Two-and-a-half year sentence for sexually assaulting three women in the 80s and 90s
A FORMER mayor has been jailed after being convicted of historic sexual allegations.
John Cooper was a Conservative councillor for May Bank for more than two decades, served on Staffordshire County Council, and was twice mayor of Newcastle Borough Council.
The 80-year-old denied four charges of indecent assault and one charge of gross indecency with a child.
But the veteran politician, of St Mary’s Road, Wolstanton, was found guilty after a trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court of the four charges of indecent assault in the 1980s and 1990s. He was found not guilty of gross indecency with a child.
Now he has been jailed for two-and-a-half years and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.
