Car park sales 'will save our green spaces'

Two set to go along with part of a third

- Phil Corrigan Local Democracy Reporter

BUILDING homes on 'under-utilised' car parks will help protect green spaces from development, council leader say.

Cabinet members at Newcastle Borough Council have approved the disposal of two car parks near Newcastle town centre along with part of a third, following a consultation.

They say the car parks are no longer needed following the opening of the Castle multi-storey in Liverpool Road, and can be sold off for housing - reducing the need to build homes on green spaces.

According to a council report, the 22-space Blackfriars car park, next to Staffordshire Honda, is 'significantly underused' and if combined with neighbouring land will form a 'suitable area for development.
