Talented Jade's queen of the track

- Yasmin Sarwar

All systems go!

MEET the young woman who has a passion for petrol, from racing cars and karts to building and repairing them.

Female boss Jade Goodwin has been interested in the male-led industry since she was 10, despite coming from a working-class family in a world where money usually means success.

The 26-year-old, of Blurton, bought her first go-kart at the age of 11 and never looked back.

She drives an old Ford Fiesta against men and a few other women, despite receiving criticism from her male rivals who 'can't stand' losing to her.

As well as racing and rallies, Jade collects engines from the 90s, restores them and then races using them. Her dad David Goodwin has been a pillar in her motorsport career since day one.

Jade, who won the British Opens aged 20, said: "I went to watch racing aged 10 and I thought 'I want to do this', but I wondered if I could because there were no girls competing. When I started, there was maybe one girl at the entry list on a weekend, now there's three to six girls, and there are a lot of mums pushing their daughters and being their mechanic.

"You've got to be really good and really well practiced to go far, but having money helps too. When I race at Silverstone it costs about £20 a ticket, and it costs £400 to £500 to enter car races. It's a lot of money but for that you get competitor tickets, but I tend to give mine away.
