Murder convict found hanging from tree in Choudwar Jail premises

A murder convict serving a life sentence was found hanging from a tree within the premises of Choudwar Circle Jail on Saturday evening, raising concerns about lapses in security measures at the facility.
The deceased has been identified as Bishnu Charan Swain, aged 33, from Samantarapur under the Tangi Police Station jurisdiction. Swain had been imprisoned as an undertrial prisoner after being charged with the murder of his cousin in June 2021. In January 2025, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime.
Recently, Swain had been granted a three-day parole to attend his mother’s death rites. He returned to the jail on May 17 after completing the rituals.
