THE recent study revealing that 71% of newborn Olive Ridley turtles at Odisha's Rushikulya nesting site are female presents a striking contrast to India's societal preference for male offspring.

While the government's "Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao" campaign struggles to shift deep-seated biases, these marine creatures seem to have embraced female dominance - albeit unintentionally. This phenomenon, however, is not a cause for celebration but a warning sign of ecological imbalance with far-reaching consequences for the species.
