Crackdown launched on motorbike helmets

A new nationwide road safety campaign launched in Thailand last Sunday (June 1) has sparked debate among residents and visitors alike, as authorities begin stricter enforcement of motorcycle helmet regulations.

The 'Safe Roads Project', initiated by Thai traffic police, will see intensified checks on motorcyclists and passengers who fail to wear helmets in an effort to reduce road accidents and fatalities.

Deputy government spokesman Anukul Prueksanusak announced last Sunday that, under Section 122 of the Land Traffic Act, both drivers and passengers on motorcycles are legally required to wear crash helmets at all times, regardless of distance or location.

Mr Anukul confirmed violators now face an increased fine of up to B2,000 quadrupled from the previous B500 penalty. Drivers who allow passengers to ride without a helmet will be subject to a double penalty, he added.
