DA seeking P74 B for key agri programs

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is seeking P73.9 billion in next year's proposed budget for key farm programs and a rice industry support fund meant to help local farmers compete with cheaper imports.

In a statement yesterday, the DA said P43.9 billion would be allocated to national programs covering rice, corn, high-value crops, organic farming, livestock and urban agriculture.

Meanwhile, P30 billion which is triple this year's allocation - will be earmarked for the Rice - Competitiveness Enhancement Fund.

The DA said the funding is part of the agency's P176.7-billion spending plan for 2026, which is 13 percent higher than this year's P155.6 billion and is now under congressional scrutiny.
