Bank profits rise to P198 B in first half

Philippine banks booked higher earnings in the first half, lifted by steady loan demand and stronger trading gains, even as provisions for bad loans surged.
Preliminary Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) data showed the industry's combined net income increased by 4.1 percent to P198.14 billion from P190.26 billion a year earlier.
Total operating income climbed by 12.2 percent to P684.71 billion in January to June from P610.3 billion in the same period last year.
This came as net interest income, or earnings from core lending and investment activities, grew by 11.7 percent to P564.98 billion.
