New BP chair will cement move out of green energy

A rare British victory may be getting closer for Elliott Management, the US activist investor. Last week, BP appointed a new chairman, Albert Manifold, who is likely to be sympathetic to the changes demanded by Elliott when it acquired over 5% of the oil company some time before April, making it the firm’s second biggest shareholder.
Elliott emphasised Manifold's "track record of delivering shareholder value", before again setting out the priorities it wants him and the chief executive, Murray Auchincloss, to deliver on. These include deep cost-cutting, cash generation and a refocusing on oil and gas production, away from the renewable energy strategy that until recently was presented as BP's future.
