CM seeks stringent legislation for exemplary punishment
FACING severe criticism over West Bengal government's handling of the brutal rape-murder of a trainee doctor, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding stringent Central law for speedy trials in rape cases within 15 days.
Alapan Bandopadhyay, chief advisor to the CM, read out the letter at a presser on Thursday. Noting the alarming recurrences of rape cases throughout the country, Mamata said that according to available data, nearly 90 rape cases are reported daily. In many cases, rape victims are murdered.
