First Cabinet meet clears 3 crore housing for poor

HOURS after releasing the 17th installment of PM Kisan Nidhi for over 9 crore farmers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired the first meeting of his newly formed 72-member cabinet at his residence.
In a second major decision, the Cabinet chaired by the PM, approved the government assistance for the construction of 3 crore houses for the poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) in one go.
In the just-concluded elections for the 18th Lok Sabha, the PM promised to ensure houses for the poor in a much larger way. The new houses will be equipped with kitchen gas line, water and electricity connections.
"It has been decided in the Cabinet meeting today to provide assistance to three crore additional rural and urban households keeping in mind the increase in the number of eligible families," an official said, adding the government was committed to ensuring houses to all poor families in the country.
