INDIA and the United States on Tuesday sealed a ₹34,500-crore deal to procure 31 Predator high-altitude long-endurance drones from American defence major General Atomics to bolster up Indian military's combat prowess along the contested borders with China.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed the contract with the US government for procuring MQ-9B Sky and Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, officials said.

A separate agreement was inked between the defence ministry and General Atomics Global India Pvt Ltd for performance-based logistics for the drones through depot-level maintenance, repair and overhaul of the platforms in India, MoD officials said.

The contracts were inked here in the presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and top defence and strategic brass of India. Vivek Lall, the Chief Executive of General Atomics Global Corporation who played a key role in the negotiations on the deal, was present during the signing.
