Collapse of sugarcane farming in Srikakulam

SUGARCANE cultivation in Srikakulam district is facing a severe crisis, with a significant reduction in the area under cultivation over the past 22 years, following the closure of the cooperative sugar factory at Amadalavalasa.
The remaining private sugar factory at Sankili in Regidi mandal is planning to cut back its crushing limits and shift to ethanol production using maize.
Historically, sugarcane cultivation spanned over 60,000 acres across multiple assembly segments, including Amadalavalasa, Rajam, Palakonda, Srikakulam, Narasannapeta, and Tekkali.
However, after the closure of the Amadalavalasa sugar factory in 2003, sugarcane cultivation steadily declined in the Tekkali, Narasannapeta, Amadalavalasa, and Srikakulam areas.
