FORCED to walk nearly 500 metres along the busy 100 Feet Road, which forms part of the East Coast Road, pregnant women travelling by bus from rural areas of Puducherry face serious hardships to reach the Rajiv Gandhi Women and Children's Hospital at Ellaipillaichavadyas.
The women, many in advanced stages of pregnancy and often accompanied by small children, come from distant areas such as Villupuram, Cuddalore, Villianur, Nettapakkam, Mannadipet, Thavalakuppam, Kirumampakkam, and Bahour. Most buses from Villupuram or Cuddalore drop passengers near Indira Gandhi Square, from where the hospital is a considerable distance away by walk.
