TWO jail officials were suspended after a video showing high-profile inmates partying inside Ranchi's Birsa Munda Central Jail went viral, sparking political outrage and demands for a judicial probe.
The suspensions of Assistant Jailor Devnath Ram and Jamadar Vinod Kumar Yadav were immediate. The footage, said to have been shot a few months ago, showed two inmates - Vidhu Gupta, accused in the liquor scam, and Vicky Bhalotia, accused in the GST scam - dancing in shorts and Tshirts to the beats of a Haryanvi song inside a special hall within the jail premises.
The video went viral online, raising concerns about the alleged nexus between influential inmates and corrupt prison staff inside Jharkhand's jails.

Prescription for a change
BENEATH the hush of a remote village in Pudukkottai, a team of youngsters stays equipped with skincare ointments and medicines in hand, ever ready to volunteer for a cause. Led by a 45-year-old doctor, a deep sense of empathy fills their eyes as they give away the prescribed remedies to the ones in need, taking no money in return. For them, healing the pain is important, but treating the cause, indispensable.

How Distance Reveals What Proximity Conceals
Last week, I interviewed Tuva Atasever, a Turkish astronaut, as part of my PhD research at Oxford. While Atasever detailed the rigorous selection and training, his tone shifted when he recalled crossing the Kármán line. He spoke with fond nostalgia about floating in microgravity, describing it as a meditative and spiritually exhilarating experience.
