The New Indian Express Tiruchy
|March 31, 2025
Tamil Nadu is home to several weaving hubs that produce silk and cotton saris. By constantly innovating, experimenting, and adapting to changes, several family-run businesses have found their place under the spotlight
In the quiet village of Payoor in Arani, the rhythmic clatter of looms fills the air as A Elango, a second-generation weaver, oversees his family's weaving shed. Ten handlooms stand in two parallel rows, their wooden frames smooth from years of use. In one corner, a lone weaver pedals his loom, bringing to life a striking pink and golden silk sari – the only vibrant element in the dimly-lit room. A faint scent of starch lingers.
