THIS is a sordid saga of murder, re-enacted as revenge 15 years later. It happened in Bahangaon village in Hardoi, in central Uttar Pradesh, where a group of people beat up a 48-year-old person, Mahavat, to death with sticks in full public view on Monday.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ New Delhi

Mahavat, the village Sarpanch, was bludgeoned to death by the sons of Rampal. The twist is it was Mahavat who had similarly killed Rampal 15 years ago.

Rampal's sons, in a fit of unrelenting rage all these years, avenged the death of their father, said local sources.

The police arrested 18 persons, including over half a dozen women, on Tuesday in connection with the killing.

The police said that Mahavat and his brother Babloo were convicted for beating Rampal to death in 2009.

Mahavat completed his jail term and settled in Lakhimpur Kheri. He was making both ends meet as a daily wager.
