India faces $131-bn deficit with 6 FTA partners

AS India is aggressively pursuing free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with several countries and regions, the country has a combined trade deficit of more than $131 billion with six of the 11 regions it is actively involved in negotiations, revealed the data from the Ministry of Commerce.
These six regions include Australia, Chile, South Korea, Peru, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The imbalance might trigger concerns about whether these FTAs will be able to deliver the intended benefits, especially as New Delhi pushes ahead with new rounds of trade negotiations worldwide.
