The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to consider giving compensation to farmers who cultivate watermelons, as they had suffered a huge loss due to statements from the food safety department about the alleged injection of chemicals into the fruits to enhance color and sweetness.
Closing a petition filed by M. Venkatesan, president of the Chengalpattu Farmers Welfare Association, seeking to take action against the then-designated food safety officer in Chennai and provide compensation for the farmers' losses.
