My father always used to say being humane was paramount

AFTER nearly a decade of working on indie projects, Harikrishnan Lohithadas, son of acclaimed writer-director A K Lohithadas, is making his entry into mainstream Malayalam cinema as the cinematographer of the recently released film Dheeran.

Even as the weight of his father's legacy looms, Harikrishnan is determined to find his own fire. With over 25 short films to his name, he has assisted the crew on features like Pralayashesham, Oru Jalakanyaka, Munnariyippu, Kali, and Oru Vadakkan Selfie.

Here, he speaks to TNIE about his journey, creative approach, and what lies ahead.

Can you elaborate on your journey into the film industry?

My brother and I grew up surrounded by cinema, spending vacations on film sets with our father. That atmosphere sparked something in me. But breaking into the Malayalam film industry wasn't easy. It took me 12 years to realize my dream of becoming a cinematographer. It was possible only because of my friends and family.

My friend and filmmaker Devdath Shaji, with whom I used to make short films, insisted I be part of Dheeran. This film is a milestone in our friendship.
