Cracks in GGH spark safety concerns for patients

CRACKS in several pillars of the Surgical Department Block at Government General Hospital (GGH) have raised serious structural concerns, endangering the safety of patients, staff, and medical infrastructure.
Constructed in 1969 and inaugurated by former Endowments Minister R Ramalinga Raju, the aging block now houses the high-pressure departments of Surgery, Orthopaedics, and Cardiology.
Originally built for a limited patient load, the block has been expanded to accommodate six surgical units with 180 beds, six orthopaedic units with another 180 beds, and a Cardiology Department with 40 beds, including a Cardiac ICU. It also includes three operation theatres and two surgical ICUs.
