As technology continues to evolve at a breathtaking pace, the world of engineering is being reshaped in ways that were unimaginable just a decade ago. On the occasion of Engineers' Day, we spoke to prominent educators in Karnataka -- Dr. Y. Vijaya Kumar, Principal of JNN College of Engineering, Shivamogga, and Dr. H. B. Aravinda, Principal of BIET Engineering College, Davanagere -- to gain their perspectives on the future of engineering education and the role of emerging technologies in transforming the profession.

When asked about the evolution of engineering education by 2026, Dr. Kumar confidently predicted that technology would be at the core of every engineering curriculum. "By 2026, engineering education will be deeply integrated with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented manufacturing, specifically 3D printing," he said. He believes that every engineering discipline will have a component of AI, reshaping traditional subjects with modern tools and techniques.

In a similar vein, Dr. Aravinda emphasized the importance of strong foundational knowledge. "The basics of engineering will always remain relevant. Regardless of the technological changes, if students have a strong grasp of the fundamentals, they will adapt easily to new innovations," he remarked. According to Dr. Aravinda, those who fail to master the basics will struggle as the profession evolves.
