Kannada Sahitya Sammelana sheds light on environmental issues, media responsibilities

THE last day of 19th Zilla Sahitya Sammelana held at Sahitya Grama in Chalukya Nagar at Gopishetty Koppa shed light on environment-related issues like forest encroachment, wildlife-human conflict and other topics related to media responsibilities.

Renowned Environmentalist Kalkuli Vittala Hegde said that the prime reason for deforestation in the Malnad region is increased cultivation of coffee, tea and rubber plantation.

There are around three lakh hectares of coffee plantations. These plantations have to be cultivated by cutting down the forest which is destroying the eco balance. Many developmental projects taken by governments such as construction of four and six lanes and others are exerting pressure on the environment, he opined.
