Illegal sand mining and extortion on the rise in Jagatsinghpur

ILLEGAL sand lifting has turned out to be a massive money churner in Jagatsinghpur district with organised mafia carrying out operations in brazen violation of law.
As per sources, there are 18 sand ghats (quarries) across various tehsils - three on Mahanadi river in Raghunathpur tehsil, seven on Mahanadi and Chitrotpala in Tirtol tehsil, two on Devi river in Jagatsinghpur, three in Biridi, and three in Nuagaon tehsil. Despite a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles, sand mafia continues to operate using tractors, JCBs, and sand pumps to extract sand from river beds in violation of National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives.
