Virus alert, horses & mules put on quarantine

AN equine influenza virus is affecting horses and mules in Uttarakhand a month before the portals of the Kedarnath shrine open for pilgrims on May 2.

AN equine influenza virus is affecting horses and mules in Uttarakhand a month before the portals of the Kedarnath shrine open for pilgrims on May 2. A large number of devotees use the animals to reach the shrine.

Authorities found 12 horses and mules affected by the virus. In response, they have quarantined all equine animals along the pilgrimage route.

Uttarakhand's Animal Husbandry Minister Saurabh Bahuguna issued strict directives to officials. "We must focus on thorough screening of horses and mules before and during the Char Dham Yatra. We cannot afford any negligence in ensuring the health and safety of these animals."
