Teens often try multiple products recommended online, but not all are safe. Using the wrong product can lead to dryness, irritation, or even long-term skin damage. Experts say the best way to manage dry skin is through proper diagnosis and using the right moisturiser prescribed by a doctor.

According to Dr Preethy Harrison, HOD and senior consultant in dermatology at Rajagiri Hospital, almost everyone can experience dry skin during the cold seasons, but it is seen more in the elderly and persons with preexisting skin conditions.

“Dry skin in the current weather is due to the cold and dry air coupled with indoor AC or heating, which strips the skin of moisture and makes it scaly and sometimes itchy. Hot water baths and the use of scented harsh soaps further contribute to skin dryness as the natural oils are washed away,” she said.

There are two main types of dry skin — those caused by genetic factors and those caused by age-related or other factors.
