Justice Varma Impeachment Motion to be Fast-Tracked

|July 19, 2025
EVEN as Justice Yashwant Varma moved the Supreme Court in the cash-recovery row on Friday, the government appears to be moving ahead with the impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court judge in the Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled to begin July 21.
Emphasising the legislature's role in the removal of judges, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said Parliament has the right to remove a Supreme Court or High Court judge.
Speaking to the media, Meghwal said bringing an impeachment motion against Varma is entirely a matter of the parliamentarians and the Centre is nowhere in the picture.
The minister further said if Justice Varma does not agree with the report and approaches the Supreme Court or a high court, it is his prerogative.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said all parties are on board with the impeachment of Justice Varma. The minister said he has been speaking to MPs across party lines to take a unified stand on the matter, and so far it has been heading in the right direction.
