Tree felling sparks row over alleged misuse of power by officials

THE recent felling of exactly 40 trees in a prime area of Mysuru has triggered a storm of criticism, with environmentalists accusing local authorities of deliberately skirting mandatory public consultation norms.
As per environmental regulations, felling more than 50 trees requires prior public notice and consultation. However, officials reportedly exploited this loophole by limiting the count to 40, sparking allegations of deliberate manipulation.
