MIMS Has Psychiatric Counseling Unit, Says Dean

In the wake of two suicides on the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) premises within a month, dean and director Dr Narasimhaswamy P said: "MIMS has a dedicated psychiatric counseling unit headed by Dr Bindiya J. The center is open round-the-clock for students. I have convened a hostel committee meeting on Wednesday with wardens and faculty to create a blueprint to address student mental health concerns."

Dr. Bindiya said counseling sessions are held every Tuesday and Friday. "Many students suffer silently due to academic stress, relationship issues, family problems, and exam pressure. Some seek help voluntarily, but many do not open up or even speak to their friends," she said.

She emphasized that early intervention could have saved the two students. "Post these incidents, we now plan to include parents in mental health orientation sessions during admissions," she added.
