Forty people, included aid-seekers, perish in Gaza Strip; global condemnation for killing of scribe; Israel maintains al-Sharif had Hamas link
-
ISRAELI forces killed at least 40 people across the Gaza Strip overnight and into Monday, including a well-known journalist, according to local health officials. The Al Jazeera correspondent and others were killed in airstrikes after press advocates said an Israeli "smear campaign" stepped up when Anas al-Sharif, the deceased journalist, cried on air over starvation in the territory.
Israel's military asserted that al-Sharif had led a Hamas cell — an allegation that Al Jazeera and al-Sharif previously dismissed as baseless.
