WITH an aim to tackle floods, coastal erosion and other environmental risks posed by climate change, the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) has outlined a detailed roadmap for integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into urban planning in select places of Mangaluru.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Mangaluru

In its report, "Urban Greenprints: A Nature-based Solutions Feasibility Framework for Urban Coastal Regions", the centre stated that with a strategic investment of Rs 172.97 crore, Mangaluru could potentially avoid damages amounting to Rs 11.62 crore annually caused by floods and other climate-related risks.

Due to rapid urbanisation, encroachments on water bodies, and increasing infrastructure demands, Mangaluru has witnessed a decline in natural spaces. As a result, the city has become vulnerable to extreme climatic conditions. The report highlighted how traditional infrastructure such as stormwater drains and concrete barriers could not bear the impact of climate change.
