Healthcare staff allege they are being pressured to pay 'bribe'

- Prakash Samaga @Udupi

THE state government's decision in May this year to hike salaries of healthcare staff who are to be newly recruited under National Health Mission (NHM), has led to an uproar and allegations of 'commission row' in Udupi district.

NHM healthcare staff allege they are forced to part with three months' worth of pay hikes, for their recruitment to be processed, and to be granted revised pay. As per the government circular issued on May 29, 2025, MBBS medical officers, clinical specialists and nursing officers are entitled to sizeable salaries ranging from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.40 lakh. However, healthcare staff in Udupi are claiming they are being pressured to part with a portion of their salary as unofficial payment, to be considered for the new recruitment process.
