Remove cultivation threshold for banana insurance: Farmers

CITING that unseasonal rain, gale and lightning strikes have severely impacted the livelihood of banana farmers, a farmers' federation on Monday appealed to the state government to offer a dedicated crop insurance for banana plants and remove the minimum cultivation threshold criterion to avail of insurance.
Cauvery-Vaigai-Kiruthumal-Gundar Irrigation Farmers' Federation district president R Rampandian said, "It takes nearly 10 months for banana plants to bear fruit, and the cultivation cost per acre ranges from ₹70,000 to ₹80,000. When disasters strike, farmers suffer huge losses and receive only a meagre compensation from the agriculture depa
