Madurai-Thoothukudi track works yet to start despite GO for land acquisition

IN the last one year there has been no progress in the Madurai-Thoothukudi broad gauge (BG) line work.
An RTI reply said that the state government disbanded the office set up for land acquisition for the project. Meanwhile, railway enthusiast and a representative of Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) requested Chief Minister MK Stalin to appoint an IAS officer to exclusively look into railway projects across the state.
Sources said the Madurai-Thoothukudi via Arupukottai BG line work was announced in the financial year 2011-12, for a length of 143.5 km. The 18 km Meelavittan-Melmarudur stretch was completed and authorised by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) on March 8, 2022. The land acquisition for the remaining stretch from Melmarudur to Tiruparankundram (Madurai) was still under way.
