Residents intercept tanker lorry dumping toilet waste into a stream near state highway
THE Kozhikode, once lauded for its progressive waste management practices, is now under scrutiny following alarming incidents of illegal waste dumping, threatening public health and environmental safety.
In a shocking incident that took place around 11.30 pm in Mukkam on Thursday, vigilant residents intercepted a tanker (registration number KL 45 D 7396) named Chippi Transport dumping toilet waste into the Ovungal stream along the Edavanna-Koyilandy state highway. The stream, a crucial water source for drinking and domestic use, flows into the Iruvazhinjhi river, which supplies water for several drinking water projects.
Upon being confronted, the tanker occupants fled the spot. The eyewitnesses stated that the area reeked of an unbearable stench and signs of repeated dumping were evident.
