After 14-year hiatus, Kondotty Nercha off to cracking start

THE historic Kondotty Nercha (offering) got off to a colourful start on Sunday, with the bursting of kathinas, in the presence of cannons sourced from the Malabar Special Police (MSP) camp.
The five-day-long nercha is held in memory of Sufi saint Muhammad Shah (the first Kondotty thangal).
The festivities, also known as Kondotty Pooram, involve both Hindus and Muslims.
The nercha is also observed as an agricultural festival. The ceremonies are performed on fields that have been harvested. The sale of agricultural produce is an important part of the nercha.
