A DAY after an elderly couple was found murdered inside their house at Thiruvathukkal in Kottayam, the police on Wednesday arrested an Assam native—their former domestic help and the prime suspect—from a poultry farm at Meladoor near Thrissur.
Amit Urang, 23, was tracked down using mobile phone tower signals. The accused, belonging to Pithagutty in Dibrugarh district, will be produced before the court on Thursday, the police said.
The bodies of businessman T K Vijayakumar, 70, and wife Meera, 67, were found lying in pools of blood in separate rooms, with their faces bearing injuries inflicted with a sharp weapon, on Tuesday morning.
According to investigators, Urang, while fleeing the scene, had used one of Vijayakumar's mobile phones, which helped the police nab the accused within 24 hours of the crime being reported. "We were able to follow his digital trail and stay right behind him as he tried to flee."
