Chellanam: Story of a forest by the sea

ON the southwestern border of Kochi lies the coastal village of Chellanam — a place of tranquil beauty, known for a majestic coastline, winding canals and quiet lagoons.
Despite its picturesque charm, Chellanam is often synonymous with sea fury. Over the decades, its residents have repeatedly been forced into relief camps as tidal waves battered their homes. According to reports, the village has faced coastal erosion since as early as 1928, when dredging operations to develop the Kochi port began altering its shoreline.
Last month marked 2,000 days since the people of Chellanam began agitating for a seawall. Following heightened protests, the state government approved a ₹344.2-crore project to construct a seawall and 15 groynes along the 12km stretch between Chellanam and Cheriyakadavu.
