Protests erupt over soil excavation at Muthukunnu Hill for NH work

LOCAL residents have intensified protests against soil extraction from Muthukunnu Hill in the Arikulam and Nochad panchayats, following earlier agitations against similar activities at Pozhikkavu Hill for National Highway construction.
On Saturday morning, residents halted lorries intended for soil extraction, blocking road access in the area. The members of the Samara Samiti have announced plans to escalate their protests in the coming days.
The Samara Samiti highlights the environmental sensitivity of Muthukunnu Hill, which stands approximately 45 metres high. They said that soil removal is currently being conducted using Taurus lorries capable of carrying 7,000 cubic feet of soil.
