Monsoon Turns Nightmare for Residents of North Kuppam

Slush & debris from NH work site wash into over 40 homes in locality in the past four days

CH NAGAR in North Kuppam is bracing for a grim monsoon season, with landslides continuing to pose problems in the area where a hill is being cut for the development of National Highway (NH) 66. For the past four days, slush and debris from the site have been washing into more than 40 homes in the locality, destroying three houses and leaving residents terrified.

Local residents, especially women and the elderly, say they are afraid to sleep at night, fearing a disaster similar to the Shiroor landslide could strike Kuppam any moment.

Among the worst-affected are the families of Usman, Shabana, and Bushra. Their houses have been destroyed, with mud filling up every room. Furniture, utensils, documents, and study materials have been buried under layers of sludge. Even wells have been clogged, and huge mounds of soil now lie in backyards.
