Vijayapura: Crashing garlic prices cause discontent among farmers

Garlic, which was sold at ₹35,000 last year, plummeted to ₹7,000-8,000 per quintal this year
FARMERS in Vijayapura who turned to garlic cultivation for high returns are now facing financial distress due to a sharp drop in prices.
Last monsoon, garlic was sold at Rs 35,000 per quintal, prompting increased cultivation. However, in the current harvesting season, prices have plummeted to Rs 7,000-Rs 18,000 per quintal, making it difficult for farmers to recover their investments.
The Muddeshwar market premises in Nidagundi taluk, a mega garlic trading hub, sees transactions of 500 to 1,000 quintals per day trading, attracting wholesalers from Bagalkot, Gadag, Hubballi, and Davangere. Some farmers transport their produce to distant markets, but prices remain low across regions.
