EMINENT medical teacher and distinguished professor of Medicine Dr. P.S. Shankar of Kalaburagi has achieved yet another rare milestone in his illustrious career spanning more than six decades by editing all three editions of the first ever Medical Encyclopedia in Kannada spanning over three decades with the first edition of the book published by the Kannada University at Hampi in 1995 and the third edition of the encyclopedia released in 2025, said T.V. Sivanandan of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Sharnbasva University Kalaburagi.

In a press note, Sivanandan said that Kannada is among the few Indian languages distinct for publishing such a comprehensive medical encyclopedia.

Most of the Indian languages have medical dictionaries in their languages, but only a very few have come out with encyclopedias. The idea of publishing the first encyclopedia in Kannada was the brainchild of Central Sahitya Academy award winner Dr. Chandrasekhar Kambar, who had requested Dr. Shankar to edit the first medical encyclopedia in Kannada when he was the VC of the Kannada University way back in 1993.
