DEMANDING withdrawal of the suspension of 18 BJP MLAs by legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader for a period of six months, several party leaders and activists staged a protest in Belagavi on Monday. A memorandum addressed to the Governor was also submitted by them to the district administration.

The protesters called the decision of Khader to suspend the MLAs as illegal and unconstitutional and said the decision to suspend them was unilateral and one-sided. Such a decision snatched the constitutional rights that the MLAs have, they said, adding that the Speaker should reconsider his decision.

On the occasion, the party workers hit out at the state government for its alleged appeasement of one particular community and said the four per cent reservation given to the Muslims should also be withdrawn. They said the decision was against the interests of Hindus.
