12 Maternal Deaths in 3 Months Spark Concerns

THERE has been a rise in the number of women who died while pregnant or soon after childbirth in Raichur district. The tragic deaths of 12 women in the district over the past three months have sparked widespread public concern and outpaced the slower rise in maternal mortality across the state. Karnataka recorded 348 maternal deaths till November last year, with 217 cases reported in just four months, from August to November, sources said. The recent death of Saraswati (24) at Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital has increased the toll to three at the hospital since December last year.
