Assam passes bill banning polygamy; UCC next

THE Assam assembly on Thursday passed a bill to ban polygamy, making it an offence which may lead toa maximum of 10 years of imprisonment, barring some exceptions.
People belonging to the Scheduled Tribe category and those living in areas under the Sixth Schedule have been excluded from the purview of the the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025.
“Women’s rights will not be compromised. Through the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill 2025, we secure legal protection, strict penalties and real accountability,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after the bill was passed.
